9 IMPOSSIBLE SITUATIONS

Impossible situations. My life became a series of impossible situations and impossible feelings. What used to be me, a relatively normal, relatively functional, relatively ordinary person became this confused individual ... insecure, frightened, yet somehow strangely alive. Ever since I came here, I have spent my days running away from him, while secretly hoping that I will bump into him at the same time. It was ludicrous, unbearable, and exciting, not to mention sexually frustrating. This last part was actually the most disturbing of it all. I wasn’t a virgin by all means, but I wasn’t all that experienced either. And since I preferred men in books to those in real life, my experience was limited and mostly disappointing. As far as last night was concerned, I had no idea what to expect from him next.

Not to mention the fact that Vanessa continued to tease me mercilessly about it all.

‘Oooo, Bronte will host the beast's little party.’

‘What will the hawtie beast give her in return?’

It went on and on. I knew she didn't mean anything by it and that she was doing it mostly out of boredom. Rachel was pretty much indifferent, or better yet tactful, at least as long as she was caffeinated enough, while Devlin was pretending he’s above all those 'childish' things, although he was the biggest gossip of them all.

It was around noon when I walked out of the library, driving a little cart filled with old newspapers and damaged books we were going to recycle. I was walking down the hall when the front door opened and Magnussen let himself in. Max was just passing by and greeted him with his usual polite smile, but seemed fairly indifferent about it, considering the fact that Caine told him to keep Magnussen out of the house. I opened the small door that led to the backyard as Magnussen hurried towards me to help me with the cart.

“Hello beautiful,” he said with a grin, “what’s up?”

“Not much,” I said with a smile, “just getting rid of this.”

I had to admit, it was nice to see a smiling face around here for a change. Max usually seemed so stoic that he must have been a philosopher in a previous life, while my beast was mostly just sexy and appropriately brooding.

“Hop on,” he said, “I'll drive you.”

I giggled, but did what he told me and sat in the cart, as he started to push it down the small path that led to the backyard.

“So,” he said from behind me, “how's it going?”

“Oh, I think it's coming along nicely,” I said with a smile, “the library will be ready on time, don't worry.”

“Oh, I wasn't talking about that,” he said, “I meant living under the same roof with ... how are they calling him these days ... the beast of Aubyn Hall?”

“Oh, that,” I said, blushing.

I turned around and looked at him, only to see him grinning at me.

“I barely see him at all,” I said, looking away, “he doesn't have time to concern himself with me .
